Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's soccer season came to a close Tuesday afternoon as the Barons fell to La Roche 1-0 in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Barons close out the season 6-11-1, marking the most wins in a season in program history since becoming full members of the NCAA. FUS finished the season 3-6 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
After a tightly contended first half in which neither team could find the back of the net, the Red Hawks found their winning goal with just over 30 minutes to play in the second half. Joaquin Franch got a touch on a loose ball that he fed to Pedro Ansede for the game-winner.
"We played one of our best games of the year, we just didn't get the result we wanted," remarked head coach Ward Rogers.
The Barons had three really nice chances to throughout the game but could not find the back of the net. Sophomore Leo Herrmann put his head on the ball and got it past the goalie on a corner kick but a foul brought the goal back. In the second half, the midfield put a nice through ball to Joe Francis who took a shot that went just past the far post and senior John Imbimbo put a great shot on goal that the La Roche goalie made a impressive stop on.
"If you take a look at time possession, it was about 50/50. It was just a really even game. Our guys played very well. Certainly played well enough to win the game."
"The defenders played really well and the midfield had a good day. We really developed our outside space really well. We just need to take advantage of the opportunities we create. The last 10 minutes it was pretty much us just scrambling try to score."
"Our guys played right up to the end, left their hearts on the field for sure," remarked coach Rogers.
"Our record is better than it has been, but how we played this year is far better than it has been."
