Lady Baron Tennis Sweeps La Roche to End Conference Play

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Franciscan women's tennis finally took on La Roche College after the match was postponed a couple of days ago due to inclement weather and was able to sweep the Lady Redhawks 9-0.

The rescheduled match took place in an indoor facility in Pittsburgh to prevent another cancellation; however, the match did not start until 9 p.m. and only four courts were available for play, presenting a challenge to both teams of playing so late into the night.

"Although it wasn't ideal, we went out and played well and got the win," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "Not having an indoor facility close, you kind of get acclimated to playing whenever you can. I think that's what makes it the hardest is it being so close to midterms and the need for studying. I think the girls are a little preoccupied so it makes it tough."

Doubles play continued to improve as all three Lady Baron teams won. The no. 3 doubles pair of sophomores Anna O'Connor and Maggie Vander Woude continued to impress with a 8-1 win.

"Three doubles is still playing really well together," Ellis said. "That's what I'm watching right now is how people are playing at doubles. I think we're going to do much better this time around."

Senior Renata Crespo played in the most competitive match of the night at no. 2 singles. The senior won the first set handily 6-1 but had to battle in the second set, barely pulling out a 7-5 win.

Crespo's doubles partner, freshman Julia Razook, continued her success in singles play, winning her no. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-3, despite being the last one on the courts.

The sweep of La Roche brings conference play to an end. Franciscan finished third in the conference with a 6-2 record and will host an AMCC first round match on Saturday against the no. 6 seeded Medaille Lady Mavericks. After beating La Roche 9-0, Ellis feels confident about the team's chances in the tournament.

"All around, it got us ready for Medaille on Saturday," Ellis said. "We are playing pretty well right now."

Franciscan will play one more nonconference match before the AMCC tournament when the team travels to Bethany College (W.V.) to take on the Bison for the second time this year on October 9 at 4 p.m.
