Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Franciscan men's basketball ran into a surging D'Youville College squad in their last game of the season, losing to the Spartans 76-58. The Barons went 2-2 in their final four games and finish the season at 6-18, tying the program record for most wins in a season.
"When you look at the course of the season we really progressed and we got better as the season went on," head coach John Lamanna said.
Coming off of a 61-56 home win over La Roche College, the Barons just didn't have the same energy on the road. D'Youville's star center Julian Reed, who Franciscan limited earlier in the season, scored seven of the Spartan's first nine points and had his way throughout the night.
A layup from Baron senior Moses Sullivan gave FUS an 11-9 lead eight minutes into the game and two teams went back and forth for the next six minutes. Then two straight threes led to a 12-2 Spartan run from which FUS never quite recovered.
"It really was just a lack of energy that we had," Lamanna said. "D'Youville is a team that is playing the best basketball that they have all year and we just didn't quite come mentally ready to compete."
Franciscan's offense was able to create some scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the game but they weren't able to convert on nearly as many of those chances as D'Youville. The Barons shot just 27-percent from the field while the Spartans shot 40-percent, including 39-percent from long range.
The most effective scorer for the Barons was Sullivan. The senior finished his collegiate basketball career with 16 points, and nine rebounds. He and freshman Keoni Sablan, who finished with 15 points, were the only FUS players to score in double digits.
The senior finishes out his two years at Franciscan with 588 total points, consistently leading the team in scoring on the court and formation off the court.
"Moses has had a great career and he will be missed," Lamanna said.
While this last win would have capped off an encouraging end to the Baron's season, the six wins still provided a positive outlook on the team's future. Coach Lamanna's squad was able to tie the program's best record with a roster of 11 first-year players and only three returning players.
"From where the program has been to where the program is now, there are a lot things to look forward to," Lamanna said.
