Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio—Franciscan women's basketball rallied for a late comeback to upset Pitt.-Greensburg at home, winning by a final score of 64-60.
The Lady Barons came into the matchup sitting at seventh place in the conference while the Bobcats began the night tied for second place with Pitt.-Bradford. In the teams' previous matchup, Pitt.-Greensburg was able to win comfortably on their home court 69-48, but the Lady Barons
"Tonight we got great contributions from so many people," head women's basketball coach Suzy Delaney said. "I am so proud of our ladies tonight to come back from down 12 and play so clutch in the final 10 minutes."
This win also marks the first time in the program's history that the Lady Barons have beaten Greensburg.
While most of the drama came in the second half, one exciting moment was when a long, three-point buzzer beater junior guard Monica Dawyot pulled the Barons into the half with a 24-24 tie.
"I was especially proud of the complete effort we had from Monica Dawyot tonight," Delaney said.
The junior had one of the best games of her career with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Barons struggled to start the second half with the same level of intensity, however, allowing Pitt.-Greensburg to build a 13-point lead over the first nine minutes.
With 10:28 left in regulation, freshman guard Sarah Schriner was able to start the FUS comeback with a pivotal three-point play.
"Sarah really came up big throughout the second half," Delaney said.
Schriner scored 13 points in the second half, finishing with a team high of 15.
The Lady Baron comeback would not have been complete without the leadership of veterans sophomore guard Iliana Gonzales and senior forward Lacey Huck. A combination of jump shooting, layups and free throws by both players kept the Lady Barons ahead in the last two minutes.
Gonzales was the second leading scorer on the night with 13 points while Huck contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Taking a look at conference standings, Pitt.-Greensburg will now drop to third place and the Lady Barons now move into sole possession of sixth place with five conference games left. Franciscan remains in the playoff hunt, hopeful for their first-ever appearance in the conference tournament.
The Lady Barons look to build off this win and continue their strong team play on the road against Penn St.-Behrend February 7 at 2 pm.
