Men's Tennis Dominates in Sweep Against Behrend

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. - Franciscan men's tennis continued their dominance in the AMCC with a 9-0 sweep over Penn St.-Behrend less than 24 hours after their previous conference win.

"I think we played good doubles," Head Coach Jeremy Ellis said. "We won all three doubles right away, played well, which gives us confidence going in."

New freshmen doubles partners Connor Jooste and Mitchell Plys continued their success from this week, winning their no. 3 doubles match 8-4. Plys original partner was sophomore Nicholas Behrens, who has been injured, but Jooste was able to step in seamlessly. The two had never played together before the match against Mount Union, yet their off-the-court friendship has contributed to their on-court chemistry.

"They are friends off the court, and I think it lightens a little bit of the pressure as they play together," Ellis said. "Not being familiar with playing with each on the court against being friends kind of counterbalances that. It's been good."

Turning to singles play, veteran junior Joseph Staniszewski won his no. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-0. The junior has been quiet yet solid for the Barons, using his experience to give him an advantage in conference play.

"He is a veteran who has been staying consistent down at no. 6," Ellis said. "He played a big match and really didn't give the guy a chance to get in it, just played really well."

At the halfway point in the season, Franciscan is undefeated in conference play, having yet to drop an individual match. Ellis said that he thinks there is still room for improvement before the team makes a run for their third consecutive conference title.

"I feel like we started out stronger against some of our competitors like Baldwin Wallace and Otterbein," Ellis said. "We are a little inconsistent. I think it's just based on having so many matches back-to-back and not near enough practice time, which seems to always be our problem."

The Barons will have a day to rest before taking on conference opponent Mount Aloysius at home on March 23 at 7 pm.
