COLUMBUS, Ohio – Franciscan men's lacrosse struggled to hang with a talented Capital University team, losing 24-4 to the Crusaders despite the best efforts of goalie Jonah Soucy.
Soucy played the first 33 minutes of the game and faced 32 of Capital's 46 shots on goal. The sophomore saved 18 of those, many from right on the crease, giving him a save percentage of 56 percent.
"I wouldn't have been surprised if it was 68 percent. He made some unbelievable stops on the doorstep," head coach Pete Rosaschi said. "Jonah played a great game. It would've been 30-0 in the first half without him."
The pressure was put on the goalies early and often with Capital getting off 70 shots on the Baron defense. Despite Soucy's shot-stopping skills, 11 of those shots went in during the first half, 10 of which came before David Erskine put in Franciscan's first and only goal of the half.
"They were just so much faster than us and their ball handling skills were very good," Rosaschi said. "The good news is we only had three penalties and they were only one for three on conversions, which was awesome."
The Barons did get a little more offense going in the second half as they continue to adjust to the absence of starting attacker Michael Rosaschi.
As he has in the last few games, sophomore Paul Modzelewski stepped up to become the team's most effective offensive player. The middie scored two unassisted goals in the third quarter and assisted on another. He also led the team with eight shots, something Rosaschi wants more of his players to emulate.
"Our guys are not selfish. They're not the typical egotistical attack guys and they actually share the ball too much. And that's a compliment," Rosaschi said. "Sometimes they just need to shoot the darn ball."
The Baron's final goal came once again from Erskine, tying the junior's season high of two goals in a game.
Franciscan will look to recover from their loss as they prepare for their first home game of the season against Bethany College on April 8 at 5:30 pm.
