Barons Sweep Greensburg Despite Three Week Hiatus

Box Score

GREENSBURG, Pa. - Franciscan men's tennis was a little rusty against Pitt.-Greensburg after three weeks without a match but was still able to sweep the Bobcats 9-0 to remain undefeated in conference play.

"It's clear that we haven't played a match in a while," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "This weather has been pretty miserable for our tennis this season with all of the cancellations of matches and lack of practice time."

With Pitt.-Greensburg losing their top two players from last year, however, the Barons had an easier time compared to the two teams' previous matchup, the nail-biting 5-4 win that came down to the last match in the AMCC championship

"We were expecting them to be another challenge from last year but losing their one and two helped us out a little bit," Ellis said. "They had the rest of their lineup but everyone moved up two spots. It definitely wasn't as intense but they still have some good players across the board."

The no. 1 doubles team of Zachary and Joseph Quiza struggled in the beginning of their match but eventually won 8-5. Joe Quiza then turned his play around at no. 2 singles, winning by a more comfortable score of 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman John Gallagher continued his success in the no. 4 singles spot, blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Gallagher, along with the rest of his teammates, remains undefeated in conference play, with Gallagher only losing one single match this entire season.

"John won rather quickly, played his game the entire time," Ellis said. "He played great."

However, while the Barons did find themselves without their captain, junior Joseph Staniszewski, for this match sophomore Nicholas Behrens was able to fill in at no. 6 singles. In Behrens' first appearance coming back from injury, the sophomore won 6-3, 6-4.

Franciscan remains at the top of the conference standings with an undefeated record of 4-0, only eight days away from the AMCC tournament where the Barons will seek their third consecutive conference title. Ellis said that this match was a good test for the team looking forward to the week ahead.

"We were rusty but it made the match a little tighter which is good mental preparation for sure," Ellis said.

The Barons will look to remain undefeated in the conference as they travel to Altoona, Pennsylvania, to take on D'Youville College on April 11 at 4 pm.
