Box Score HIRAM, Ohio – Franciscan women's lacrosse scored the final three goals of regulation to force overtime against Hiram College but lost to the Terriers 14-13 in overtime.
Up until the very last minute, the Lady Barons pulled out goals every time they needed to. The first instance came with two important goals in last minute of the first half which tied the two teams a six. The second of those goals was an unassisted score from freshman Mary Krolicki with just two seconds left on the clock.
The team had to pull off a similar feat to push the game into overtime. Instead of Krolicki it was junior Lauren Noce who played the hero. The middie scored two of Franciscan's final three goals including the game-tying goal off a free position shot with just under five minutes to go.
"Our ability to keep coming back was huge," head coach Maura Conant said.
That ability just wasn't quite strong enough to overcome the two goal deficit the Lady Barons found themselves in with two minutes left in overtime.
"That was our first game in overtime, it's a new experience for us," Conant said. "I think in new situations we just force things or make a decision that we normally wouldn't."
Franciscan did have one last gasp before everything was said and done. Sophomore midfielder Maryanna Leonard scored with 33 seconds left and senior Margaret Gargulinski controlled the ensuing draw. A turnover with 18 seconds left, however, closed the door on the effort.
With just one goal and potentially a matter of seconds separating the two teams, the defining factor was the play between the pipes. Hiram's goalie put in an impressive performance, saving 12 of Franciscan's shots to the four saved by the FUS goalie.
Outside of that statistical category, the Lady Barons were close to even or ahead in every area. They turned the ball over fewer times than the Terriers, gathered more ground balls, and were more successful in their clear opportunities, an area that Conant was particularly happy with.
"The best thing we did today was our clears. Our passing in transition was strong," Conant said. "The percentage of 16 for 18 was awesome."
Conant also said that while the goals from Noce, Krolicki, and Leonard were clutch, so too was the defensive performance of freshman Catherine Cahill.
"She played great under pressure and came up with some clutch plays, running down ground balls and getting the ball our under pressure," Cahill said.
Other standout players for Franciscan were Noce, who finished with three goals, one assist, seven ground balls, and five draw controls, and Krolicki who scored two, assisted one, grabbed five ground balls, three draw controls, and caused six turnovers.
Freshman attacker Mackenzie Jaros also tied her career high with three goals.
Jaros and the rest of the Lady Barons have two more games to grab one more win and secure the best record in program history. Their next chance will come against Capital University on the road on April 22 at 4 pm.
