Lady Barons Sweep St. Vincent

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan women's tennis team continued its dominant start to the season with a 9-0 sweep of St. Vincent, Friday afternoon.

The Lady Barons' doubles pairs set the stage for singles play with three wins to give FUS a 3- 0 lead early in the match. A large part of the strong doubles is the No. 1 doubles pair of freshman Maria Binette and junior Claire Haddad once again dominated their match, defeating St. Vincent, 8-3.

"Maria and Claire play really well together," remarked head coach Jeremy Ellis. "I am really excited about our doubles match ups. When we can go into matches 2-1 or 3-0 it makes it so much easier on singles. I expect to see great things from our doubles match ups."

Senior Renata Crespo and sophomore Maggie Vander Woude took the No. 2 doubles 8-4 before sophomore Anna O'Connor and sophomore Emily Mathias rouded out the doubles sweep with a 8-6 win in the No. 3 spot.

Binette and Crespo easily took the No. 1 and No 2 singles matches for a clean sweep on the day for the two Lady Barons while Julia Razook won in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

"We have Maria playing No. 1 for us and she is playing well. She had a tough match the last match but a freshman playing No. 1 in their first college match and playing at No.1 doubles there's added pressure."

Haddad added another win for herself with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 4 singles before freshman Taranee Karimpour took a hard fought No. 5 singles match, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 in a tiebreaker.

Sophomore Marisa Pinto rounded out the sweep with a 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 6 singles.

The Lady Barons open AMCC action as they look to defend their league crown against Medaille beginning at 2:00 pm.
