Barons Take Down Bison in First Win of the Season

Box Score

BETHANY, W. Va.- The Franciscan women's soccer team nabbed its first win of the season against opponent the Bethany Bison, 2-1.

With a young team in the works, the Lady Barons capitalized on their strengths and opportunities. FUS (1-3) dominated the field and worked hard to maintain possession of the ball. Though the score was close, FUS stat sheet was very much in favor of the Lady Barons. FUS kept the Bison's goalie, Taylor Sasak, busy with 24 shots, 13 on goal while the Lady Barons held a 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Bison managed just six shots in the 90 minutes and had only two on net.

"Each game we are getting better. The team is really starting to click," remarked head coach Clare McBane on the Lady Barons' first win of the year. "Obviously we need to work on finishing with that many corner kicks this game. There is definitely more room to grow, but it's exciting to see the progress."

The Barons suffered a loss when senior forward Hannah Cooke had to leave the game with an injury. She left big shoes to fill, but her younger teammates did their best to fill in the gaps.

The center midfielders for FUS created many scoring opportunities and stabilized the young offense.

Junior center mid Liz Krilich, handed out two assists in the game, one off of a corner kick. Sophomore forward Anna McCarty headed in the corner from Krilich for the first goal of the match, and her first collegiate goal. The Lady Barons took a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute when sophomore Clare Kennedy received a pass from Krilich for the final tally for the Lady Barons.

The Bison responded late in the second half with a goal from junior Brittany Fullbright, assisted by Marena Cline and Madison Cochran. However, the Barons' speed and offensive drive stifled the Bison.

The Barons look to add to the win coloumn as they host Muskingum on September 17 at 5:00 pm.
