Barons and Bison Battle to 2-2 Draw

Box Score

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Franciscan men's soccer team snapped a three-game skid as the Barons battled to a 2-2 tie in double overtime with Bethany, Wednesday evening.

The tie improves FUS to 1-3-1 on the year while it drops the Bison to 2-3-1 on the season.

Junior Joseph Duran gave the Barons a quick 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season. Duran took a pass from sophomore Leo Herrmann 6:28 into play to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. "Leo and Joe had a nice give-and-go up the field. Leo controlled the ball very well and turned on it and Joe just overlapped Leo at the end and had a really nice finish on the ball after a beautiful one-touch pass from Leo," remarked head coach Ward Rogers on the Barons' first goal. "It was just a really nice pass and even better finish on a hard-worked goal."

"Teams are really keying in on Leo this season. Last year we played with one forward and with the extra pressure on Leo, we are playing two forwards but we are having a little trouble adjusting," continued Coach Rogers on the sophomore's new role in front of the net this season. Herrmann currently has three assists on the season, tying his total from his freshman campaign.

Just under eight minutes later, the Bison knotted the score at 1-1 as Frederik Thomsen scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Kai Whitney.

The teams would take the tie into the break.

Just 2:53 into the second half, Herrmann put the visitors up 2-1. Senior Edwin de St. Aubin got the ball in a 2v3 situation in favor of the Bison and split a pair of defenders as Herrmann got around the back line to put a good touch on the ball for his fifth goal of the season.

With less than nine minutes to play, the Bison found their equalizer and sent the game into overtime. "They were pressing high and we were just having a hard time releasing the ball down the flanks. [Rey Aguilar] took a great shot low to the far post. It was a good goal, a tough shot for the goalie to defend."

Franciscan and Bethany battled for an extra 20 minutes with no victor named as each team walked away with their first tie of the year. "It was really a great team effort, especially in overtime," commented Coach Rogers. "We had two center mids that played really well tonight and had most of our backline back. Cuyler Ledyard and Leo James really played well at the outside back tonight."

"Bethany never really had a dangerous shot in over time because of our strong defense and our ability to take away the dangerous space," remarked Coach Rogers on the overtime play. "What we are really trying to do is cut down on the shots against us. We did a pretty good job at that this game, and we took a lot of dangerous space away. We are working hard on the transitions and we just need to get the ball up the field a little quicker."

Senior Edward Huber made his first appearance in the net for the Barons and posted eight saves, including three in overtime. "Edward had a great game in goal; he really helped us stay organized in the back and made some very nice saves in the net."

The Barons get a chance to recover before taking on Muskingum on Saturday in New Concord, Ohio at 4:00 pm. Following the game, the Barons return home for a pair of games in front their own fans against Waynesburg (Sept. 21 – 3:00 pm) and Washington & Jefferson (Sept. 23 – 5:00 pm).

"We get a chance to recover between games and have a chance to prepare a little bit better. The guys really like playing in front of our fans. Hopefully we get a good weather game next week to be able to play in front of the FUS fans."
