Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Franciscan women's soccer doubled its offensive output for the season as the Lady Barons ran past Muskingum, 7-0, Thursday afternoon.
The win improves FUS to 2-3 on the year while Muskingum falls to 1-4-1.
The Lady Barons started their attack early as sophomore Clare Kennedy got things rolling after just three minutes of play. Kennedy found an open back corner of the net for the first goal of the game for FUS. Kennedy, playing a new position at forward instead of her usual center midfield, is stepping up to play a new position to fill in for injured Hannah Cooke. "I was very impressed with Clare Kennedy. What she did today gave us a lot of our offensive opportunities," head coach Clare McBane complimented.
"I had two goals for this game. One, as in previous games having a ton of shots, to finally start placing and scoring those shots. The second goal was to win 50/50 balls, so we are more likely to build our attack and be shooting, which was the biggest goal of today to finally get our offense to click."
The Lady Barons put their coach's words into play and brought in the win. They controlled the game by having good ball movement and interweaving runs to capitalize on give-and-goes. Of the Lady Barons 31 shots this afternoon, they placed 21 on goal.
Prior to half time, the FUS offense tacked on two more goals to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Senior Monica Dawyot headed home a ball off a corner kick before sophomore Sarah Schriner f found an open net from across the box on a pass from Kennedy.
The second period lead to more scoring as the Barons added four more goals goals. Elizabeth Dawyot drew the goalie out with four minutes into the second half and scored her first goal of the season. Anna McCarty was next up to score and was assisted by Schriner, giving the hosts a 5-0 lead.
The final two goals came from Emily Wenner and Maria Boston. Both of them had subbed in and each found an open net waiting for them. "I was really impressed with everyone we subbed in. The level of play didn't drop and we kept having opportunities on goal which is exciting to see as a coach that they continued to have a high level of play," McBane praised.
"I won't be completely happy with a win until we have seven goals and only took seven shots. Just continuing to demand a high level of play from them and our ultimate goal is to improve on where we were in the conference in the past."
FUS out-shot Muskingum 31-10 and held a slight 4-3 advantage on corner kicks. Freshman goalie Sarah Leubking earned her first collegiate shutout with seven saves, including six in the second half.
The Lady Barons look to build on this momentum as they host Waynesburg on Monday at 5:00 pm.
