Women's Tennis Shows Mental Toughness in Conference Win

Box Score

BRADFORD, Pa. – Franciscan women's tennis was able to rebound after a tough loss to Penn St.-Behrend less than 24 hours ago to beat fellow AMCC opponent Pitt.-Bradford 8-1.

Bradford was a little bit less of a physically demanding opponent, which helped the girls to recover from the previous night's match and still perform well.

"It's definitely a tough weekend," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "I think that this match being a little lighter helps physically for the girls because the Behrend match was tough. They had some long matches and they were feeling it today. I think it was kind of a blessing to have not as much of a physically demanding match."

Doubles play continues to be an area that where the Lady Barons need some improvement, as seen by the shaky start that the no. 1 doubles team of Maria Binette and Claire Haddad had. The two were able to pull it together and still win the match 8-4, propelling Franciscan to a 3-0 lead going into singles play.

"I always push on playing good doubles since going into singles being up 3-0 or 2-1 makes singles a little easier, but we are still struggling a little bit," Ellis said. " Just getting that chemistry going and getting our doubles together is the biggest thing we've learned with the past two matches."

Singles play was a little rushed since the match was taking place in an indoor facility that was tightly booked, and senior Renata Crespo felt the pressure in her no. 2 singles match. The senior made a huge comeback in her first set, initially down 5-1, to win it in a tiebreak. As a result of the time crunch, the second set was played as a 10-point tiebreaker, which Crespo lost 10-8, forcing another 10-point tiebreaker set to decide the match. Her match resulted in the only loss for the Lady Barons on the afternoon.

Ellis said that he was pleased with Crespo's determination in such a difficult situation.

"It was better for her because 10-point tiebreakers help mental toughness," Ellis said. "I don't think of it as a loss but on paper it was."

The Lady Barons will have another quick turnaround as the team plays yet another road match, this time traveling to Pitt.-Greensburg tomorrow, September 20, at 1:30 pm.

"Playing three matches in a row on the road, it does make it tough but I believe the harder the schedule, the better prepared for conference," Ellis said. "Every match is getting us ready for October 17."
