Box Score Steubenville, OH- The evening was chilly up on the soccer field as the Lady Barons cruised to their third win of the season tonight against Waynesburg University, 4-1.
The ladies fought a physical game against the visiting Yellow Jackets. Both teams challenged each other to a quick and hard-fought game. "We knew their back line was talented, that they had speed and pressured hard, we wanted to continue to do well offensively and finish even with that pressure," coach McBane mentioned as their strategy for this game.
Waynesburg came out strong and scored its only goal just four minutes into the beginning of the game. Sophomore Nikki Davis broke through the defensive line as her teammate Sam Nichols sent a ball to her from a free kick, giving WU the 1-0 lead.
The Barons took their time in responding, as they controlled the ball and set-up their attack. With 20 minutes left in the half, Sarah Schriner found Anna McCarty on the opposite side of the field and fed her a ball for the goal to tie the game going into half time.
The second half brought more goals for the Barons as they shut out Waynesburg the last 45 minutes. Junior Elizabeth Krilich took a free kick from mid field and snuck it past the Yellow Jackets goalie, Ciara Scott. Schriner kept the ball rolling when she made an attack up the right side. Her attempt was saved by Scott but her teammate Clare Kennedy intercepted the rebound for the goal. The duo of Schriner and McCarty struck again when Schriner crossed the ball to an open McCarty who shot it past the diving goalie for the final goal of the game.
"McCarty and Schriner played exceptionally. Both of them are excelling and new to their positions this year, and each game they are getting better and better. Both are very hungry to continue to grow and it's exciting to see." coach McBane also commented on the pace of the game saying that it was similar to conference games and her players need to get used to it.
The Lady Barons next visit Geneva on Wednesday, the 23rd at 7pm. Geneva is 4-1 thus far and the Barons will have their work cut out for them as they look to continue their winning streak.
