Box Score GROVE CITY, Pa. - Franciscan women's tennis struggled to execute their points, committing a lot of unforced errors in a 6-3 loss to Grove City College.
"If you lost the matches having great rallies, great points, that's one thing," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "We're not executing enough points. We're making more errors than we are winning points and it's just causing us to be one step behind."
The Lady Barons found themselves in yet another hole after doubles play, losing two of the three matches. Senior Renata Crespo and sophomore Maggie Vander Woude continue to be the one bright spot during doubles play, winning their no. 2 match 8-4.
Ellis also switched up the doubles lineup, trying to find a winning combination. He put freshman Julia Razook and sophomore Marisa Pinto together at no. 3. The duo lost 8-3 in their first match as partners.
"It was a little shaky being their first time playing together but I think that's going to be a good team," Ellis said.
Junior Claire Haddad played the best match of the afternoon at no. 4 singles. The junior lost the first set 6-2 but won the second set 6-3 to force a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set. Haddad found herself down 6-0 and 8-2 at break in the third set and was able to pull out the 11-9 win.
"She just stayed focused and pulled it out," Ellis said.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Barons was sophomore Anna O'Connor at no. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
"Anna is clutch at no. 6," Ellis said. "She plays some good tennis. It's nice sending her out on court as a coach, I send her out on the court and I don't have to go. I'm pretty confident she's going to pull it out so it's nice to have."
This nonconference match against Grove City marks the fourth straight on the road for the Lady Barons, especially after a tough weekend with three consecutive conference matches that took a toll on the team.
"Not being a conference match makes it a little easier to walk away from a loss," Ellis said. "This is definitely a heavy away season, just the way it fell. We just need to play good tennis and prepare for our two conference matches this weekend."
The Lady Barons will return home for an AMCC matchup with D'Youville College on September 25 at 4 p.m.
"It will be nice to be at home, not have to travel and maybe get some home crowd support," Ellis said. "We're excited and ready to go."
