Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Washington & Jefferson scored with just 2:34 left in the first overtime period to lift the Presidents over the Franciscan men's soccer team, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon.
The Presidents (4-2-1) scored on a penalty kick with less than 15 minutes to play to tie the game at 1-1. With 2:34 showing in the first overtime period, Justin Nolfi sent a nice through ball into the box for Scott Hanna who put it in the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
After a tight first half where the two teams were evenly matched, the Barons finally broke the 0-0 tie in the 61st minute. Sophomore Leo Herrmann and senior John Imbimbo were working well together all game trying to break down the President center backs befoe Herrmann slide the ball to Imbimbo for his sixth goal of the season.
"Leo and John did a good job breaking down the middle tonight," complimented head coach Ward Rogers. "We made some changes before the game to our wings and we were getting the width we wanted we just had a hard time using it effectively."
"We got Leo and John some good looks, we just need to make the most of our chances."
An unfortunate foul in the box in the 76th minute led to the game-tying goal to set up the golden goal win for W&J.
"The defense played really well. They moved the ball well and helped control the pace of play. We did a great job developing opportunities, just have to finish. The W&J goalie made some really great saves that kept the Presidents in the game."
The Barons held a 20-18 advantage in shots while W&J led 9-6 in corner kicks.
Sophomore Tom Dosedel made six saves compared to eight from his W&J counterpart, Benny Wilt.
"We played with a lot of confidence tonight. There was never any point in the game that we thought it would get out of control. In our conference, the level of play is very high and if we can maintain this level of confidence into our conference season, we will do very well."
The Barons open Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Saturday as they host Pitt. – Bradford at 1:00 pm.
