Krilich Scores for Lady Barons; FUS drops Season Opener

Box Score

Westminster, PA-Junior Liz Krilich scored the lone goal for the Franciscan Lady's Soccer team at the Westminster Tournament against Grove City College. The Lady Barons fell to the Wolverines 3-1 to open the season.

Senior Hannah Cooke drew a foul outside the box and Krilich took the free kick right off the bat to start the second half.  She sent the ball sailing past the goalkeeper's outstretched arms to cut the Gove City lead in half, 2-1.

Krilich's second period attack was not enough to overcome the opponent's 19 shots of which 11 were on goal. Freshman goalie Sarah Luebking had eight saves in her collegiate debut for Franciscan. "It was a good learning experience. We knew coming into the game that it would be challenging with injuries and still figuring out starting positions," remarked head coach Clare McBane. "Grove City is a very good and experienced team."  The Wolverines showed their strength when forward Kristen Thomas put the ball into the back of the net twice while junior Jordyn White added the remaining goal.

With 12 minutes left to play in the game, Grove City's senior Thomas was passed the ball by her teammate Megan Van Kirk and scored the final goal of the game from the left side to close out the scoring. Thomas sandwiched all the goals when she scored the initial point of the game from the right side with the help of Ellen Benbow.  White added an unassisted goal at the end of the first half pushing the score to 2-0 in favor of the Wolverines going into the break.

Krilich along with Cooke each had three shots on goal, while freshman Elizabeth Dawyot and sophomore Megan Reiderer both added two. In looking towards the rest of the season, McBane stated "Losing is tough but the mistakes we made were simple - easy to correct. After losing eight seniors last year, the team is young and we are restarting our offense. It's exciting to see potential."

The Lady Barons will be in action again tomorrow afternoon as they take on Westminster to finish out their appearance in the Westminster Tournament at 4:00 pm.
