Box Score New Wilmington, Pa. - The Lady Barons' soccer team returned to the field today and played an evenly matched game with the Westminster Titans.
Head Coach Clare McBane liked what she saw on the field, "It was a nice game. We played way better than yesterday." The game was a deadlock of equivalent skill on both sides for most of the game. However the Barons improvement and hard work was not quite enough to overcome the Titans. With four minutes left to play, the Titans snagged the winning and only goal of the game. Sophomore Melissa Thomas headed the ball into the net with the assistance of senior Raechel Pusateri. The Lady Barons were unable to respond.
"It was a winnable game and I am bummed to lose. With that being said, it's exciting to see the improvement. We are perfecting our game and our ball movement," McBane also commented. Both teams had similar attempts with Westminster slightly edging Franciscan with 10 shots compared to nine. Franciscan's goalie Sarah Luebking stopped three balls from penetrating the net. The total shots on goal for both teams were dead even at four.
On the defensive end, seniors Monica Dawyot and Calene Dougherty were a solid force for Franciscan. "They played a phenomenal game and were really the rocks of this match for us," McBane complimented. These two seniors lead a strong support for the young offense. The Barons kept possession of the ball for the majority of the game and outplayed the Titans on corner kicks. Franciscan's developing offense played well together and its chemistry is emerging. This hard fought game was a very tough loss.
The Barons hope to reverse this outcome in their next match as they host Washington & Jefferson for their home opener on Friday, September 11 at 5:00 pm.
