Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore John Paul Dombrowksi had a career day but the Franciscan men's basketball team could not overcome the hot shooting of D'Youville as the Barons dropped a 92-74 decision to the Spartans, Sunday afternoon.
Dombrowski scored a career-best 22 points on the way to his third double-double of the year. The forward pulled down 11 boards, six offensive and five defensive while adding two blocks. Dombrowski was stellar from the floor shooting 10-for-13 and was 2-for-3 from the free throw line. Sophomores Daniel McElroy and Keoni Sablan each chipped in 10 points for the Barons.
The Spartans opened the game on a 16-5 run over the first 7:25 and never looked back. A jumper from Dombrowski cut the lead back to single digits, 16-7, with 10:31 to play but DYC's Zach Blask completed a traditional three-point play to give the Spartans a 12-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Junior Jacob Divens made a pair of free throws and senior Christian Duke hit a layup to pull the Barons within eight, 22-15 with 8:27 to play.
The Barons kept the Spartans close and Dombrowski made a layup with 2:53 to play to keep the lead at 10, 34-24 in favor of the Spartans but D'Youville closed out the half on a 10-5 run to take a 44-29 lead into halftime.
The Barons shot better in the second half (40.0% - 16-for-40) than the first but the hole was too big and the Spartans walked away with a 92-74 victory.
The Barons shot 38.8% (26-for-67) for the game and were 18-for-26 from the free throw line. The Spartans won the rebound battle with a 42-37 advantage on the boards.
Franciscan looks to earn their second conference win as the Barons travel to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
