Lady Barons Fall to D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Franciscan women's basketball struggled with turnovers once again in a 70-50 loss to the Spartans of D'Youville College.

The Lady Barons turned the ball over 27 times to D'Youville's 21, giving their opponent a decided advantage as the Spartans scored 20 points off Franciscan turnovers.

Sophomore center Lucia Westrick came off the bench and led the Lady Barons with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting and also chipped in eight rebounds. Seniors Iliana Gonzales and Stephanie Pahren each contributed 10 points offensively.

The Lady Barons opened up with a 6-0 run over the first 2:44 of the game before the Spartans countered with a six-point run of their own. Freshman guard Gaby De Jesus hit a three pointer with 4:45 remaining in the quarter to put the Lady Barons back up by three. However, the Spartans answered and took a one-point lead into the second quarter.

D'Youville dominated the second quarter, opening up a double-digit lead with 6:22 left in the quarter and never looking back. The Spartans outscored the Lady Barons 22-7 in the quarter and led 34-18 at halftime.

The Lady Barons played a lot better in the second half but the effort was not enough to overcome D'Youville in the end. Westrick scored eight of her 11 points in the final six minutes of the game as Franciscan shot a whopping 60 percent on 9-of-15 shooting to outscore the Spartans 22-18 in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Danette Laguerre led the Spartans with 12 points while fellow senior Alexis Smith led the team in rebounds with eight.

Franciscan will continue its four-game conference road trip when the Lady Barons will travel to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday, January 13, at 8 p.m. in search of the team's second AMCC win.
