Gonzales Scores 1,000th Point in Lady Barons Win

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior guard Iliana Gonzales became the fastest Lady Baron to reach 1,000 career points as the Franciscan women's basketball team beat Medaille College 80-70 for the team's second consecutive win.

The senior is only the second Lady Baron in program history to hit the 1,000 career point mark, following alum Lacey Huck who scored her 1,000th point in the first game of her senior season. Gonzales achieved the career milestone in just over 2.5 seasons on the team.

"Today, Iliana went over 1,000 points for her career," head coach Suzy Delaney said. "She has had a fantastic season thus far on the court. But it is so much more than that, watching her progress as a person. I couldn't be happier with how she has come out this season."

Gonzales added, "It wouldn't have been possible to achieve this milestone if it wasn't for my family, friends, coaches and teammates having such a positive impact in my life. Hard work pays off and I am truly blessed to accomplish this milestone at Franciscan University."

Three Lady Barons combined for 66 of the team's 80 points on the night, almost outscoring the Lady Mavericks by themselves, as each player turned in a 20+ point performance. Gonzales led her team in scoring for the 13th time this season by dropping 25 points on Medaille.

Sophomore center Lucia Westrick was the team's second-leading scorer with 21 points while also turning in another stellar performance on the boards, pulling down 17 rebounds. Both numbers represent career-highs for the sophomore.

Overall, the center position was strong for the Lady Barons as sophomore center Bernadette Roach played one of her best games of the season with nine points and six rebounds.

"Our two centers, Bernadette Roach and Lucia Westrick, were fantastic today," Delaney said.

Sophomore guard Sarah Schriner scored 20 points to finish as the third-leading scorer thanks to 11-for-13 shooting from the free-throw line. The sophomore also dished out eight assists against the Lady Mavericks.

"Sarah Schriner had one of her best all-around games playing defense, rebounding and distributing the ball with 20 points, six boards, eight assists and three steals," Delaney said.

Medaille was the first team to strike, scoring just 12 seconds into the game. The Lady Barons responded with two points of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Just a minute later, the Lady Mavs tied the game at four points with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter. The rest of the game, however, belonged to the Lady Barons as Franciscan did not once relinquish its lead.

The Lady Mavs tried to make things interesting in the second half, outscoring the Lady Barons 21-14 and 28-25 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, but it was not enough to overcome the lead that Franciscan built in the first half.

"We are happy with how our girls came out and established themselves in the first half," Delaney said. "Then in the second half, our girls came out and withstood Medaille's counter punch."

Franciscan returns from its four-game road trip with a 2-2 record and a 3-2 record overall in the month of January. The win against Medaille marks the first time all season that the Lady Barons have won consecutive games.

With a little over half of the conference schedule remaining, the Lady Barons sit at seventh place with a 3-5 record and 4-10 overall. The top six teams at the end of the season move on to postseason play in the AMCC tournament.

The Lady Barons will look to continue their winning streak when they host the No. 1 team in the conference, La Roche College, on Monday, January 18, at 8 p.m.
