Box Score STEUBENVILLE – Sophomore Keoni Sablan hit a quick three pointer as time expired in the second half to tie the game but Alfred State outscored the Franciscan men's basketball team 19-9 in overtime to walk away with an 81-71 victory, Wednesday evening.
After Dante Jordan hit the tail end of a trip to the free throw line with nine seconds left in the second, the Barons inbounded the ball and called a timeout in front of their bench with just over seven seconds left. Franciscan set up the perfect play as Sablan ran to the far corner and junior Jacob Divens hit the sophomore square in his hands. With Sablan's quick release, the ball dropped through the bottom of the net as time expired to send the game into overtime tied 62-62.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 66-62 lead behind a jumper from Marquis Edwards and a pair of free throws from Adam Fezza. The Pioneers were nearly perfect from the free throw line in the final five minutes to seal the win going 13-14 from the line. Divens hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left but the Pioneers maintained control to take the win, 81-71.
The entire game was back and forth affair as the contest featured nine lead changes and five ties. The first half was closely contested and the Barons took a 29-28 lead into the locker room. The Pioneers came out in the second half on fire and built a 13-point lead with 7:15 to play in regulation. The Barons closed out the half with a 19-6 run to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Sablan led all players with 23 points while senior Christian Duke chipped in 13 and handed out four assists. Divens finished the day with 11 points and seven assists while sophomore John Paul Dombrowski added seven points, four blocks and a career-best 16 rebounds.
The Barons return to AMCC action on Saturday when they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on Hilbert at 2 p.m.
