Box Score ERIE, Pa. - Franciscan women's basketball went down to the wire on the road against Penn State Behrend but the Lady Barons fell short of the win 64-61.
The game came down to rebounding as neither team had a particularly strong shooting night and both teams struggled with turnovers. Franciscan shot 36.4 percent from the floor (20-of-55) and committed 22 turnovers while Penn State Behrend shot a measly 29.2 percent (19-of-65) and turned the ball over 21 times. However, the Lady Lions won the rebounding battle, and the game, by outrebounding the Lady Barons 51-31.
Senior guard Iliana Gonzales opened up the scoring with a jump shot a minute and a half into the game. For the next four minutes, Franciscan and Behrend traded baskets until the Lady Lions ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to head into the second quarter up 12-6.
Behrend scored the first four points of the second quarter to open up a double digit lead. After sophomore guard Sarah Schriner hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to seven points, the Lady Barons settled in on defense and outscored their opponent 14-9 in the quarter. Franciscan only trailed by one point going into the locker room at halftime.
Four minutes in to the third quarter, Schriner scored five consecutive points to give Franciscan a four-point lead, forcing Penn State Behrend to take a timeout. The Lady Barons came out of the timeout and scored four more points to polish off a 9-0 run.
Another Schriner three-pointer with 1:45 left gave the Lady Barons a 10-point lead which Behrend quickly trimmed down, only trailing by three going into the final quarter.
Three quick points by Gonzales to open the quarter gave Franciscan a more comfortable lead until the Lady Lions tied the game at 46. The two teams traded baskets for the next few minutes until the Lady Lions took the lead for good with 4:18 remaining in the game.
A three-pointer by Gonzales with six second remaining cut the Behrend lead down to one point. However, the Lady Lions were solid at the free throw stripe down the stretch and hit two free throws with four seconds left to seal the win.
Gonzales led the Lady Barons with 24 points and nine rebounds while Schriner was not far behind with 22 points. Both Gonzales and Schriner outscored the leading scorer for Penn State Behrend - sophomore guard Erika Woll - who finished with 17 points.
The Lady Barons will need to have a short memory as the team hits the road in less than 24 hours for their next game.
Franciscan will travel to Buffalo, New York, to take on AMCC foe D'Youville College on Sunday, January 10, at 3 p.m.
