Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team snapped a six-game losing streak with a confident 2-0 win over D'Youville, Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Barons improved to 4-7 on the year and 1-2 in the AMCC with the win.
The Spartans and Lady Barons battled for possession back and forth in the opening 30 minutes of the game, until Franciscan put two good shots on net, both saved by Spartan keeper. Senior captain Joanna Dawyot broke the 0-0 tie with her second goal of the game to give the Lady Barons a 1-0 lead. Unassisted, Dawyot sent a chip shot in the back of the net right under the crossbar from about 30 yards out.
Head coach Clare McBane wanted to give her sophomore keeper, Sarah Luebking, a chance to loosen up and play in the field and brought in freshman Glorianna Trippe who was up for the challenge in the second half.
Franciscan maintained most of the possession in the second half and its back line kept the Spartans out of scoring opportunities to as Trippe finished her 45 minutes in net without needing a save.
The Lady Barons added an insurance goal with 5:16 to play as Olivia Janney sent the ball into the box from the right post side and it skidded across the box for Katie Kilian who put it in net for her first collegiate goal.
Clare Kennedy took one final shot for the Lady Barons that was stopped by the Spartan goalie and Kailee Juzdowski attempted a final shot for the Spartans but it went wide with just 29 seconds to play as the game ended, 2-0 in favor of the Lady Barons.
Franciscan out-shot D'Youville 18-14 while the two teams had equal corner kicks at 3-3. Luebking finished her 45 minutes in net with five saves for her second shut out of the season and her third of her career.
The Lady Barons host La Roche on Wednesday, October 5 at 2pm.
