Lady Barons Draw with Mount Aloyius

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team battled a tough Mount Aloysius team and came away with a 1-1 draw in double overtime, Tuesday afternoon.

Franciscan and the Mounties were locked in tough back and forth first half as neither team could find a goal. Each team had several scoring opportunities but could not capitalize in the opening 45.

Mount Aloysius had the first good chance as Cheyenne Kuncher broke away from the Lady Baron defense but freshman goalie Glorianne Trippe made her first save of the game and turned the shot away to keep the game scoreless. Elizabeth Krilich then took her turn with a shot on net but was unable to get it past the Mountie goalie.

With 21:32 left to play, Trippe made three of the best saves of the game to keep the Mountie off of the board. Kuncher took another shot on net and Trippe deflected the ball back into play where Katie Mirance flicked the ball at the goal and Trippe dove to her left and once again deflected the ball back to Mirance. The MTA forward collected her rebound and sent it back at the goal but Trippe did everything she could to keep the ball out of net and wrapped it up at the goal line.

Franciscan had a couple more shots before the end of the first but all went wide and the period ended with the two teams scoreless.

Whatever head coach Clare McBane said at halftime lit a fire under the Lady Barons as the team came out shooting in the second half. A shot from Joanna Daywot and Megan Luiso went wide and the goalie sent the ball into the center of the field. Franciscan gained control and put pressure back on the Mountie back line. Megan Riederer collected the ball close to the end line and sent a high ball into the box perfectly in line with Luiso's head. Luiso was able to send the header inside the near post and give the Lady Barons a 1-0 lead just 5:14 into the half.

The Lady Barons held on to the lead for most of the second half but the pesky Mounties did not back down and tied the game with 39 seconds left in regulation. Jordan Gebhart corralled a through ball about 15 yards out from the goal and shot it just out of Trippe's reach to tie the game 1-1.

Franciscan got the only two shots of the first overtime off but Dawyot's shot was stopped at the goal and Krilich had her shot blocked to keep the game tied after the extra 10 minutes. Trying to find a winner, the two teams went into the second and final overtime period. The Lady Barons and Mounties traded shots off target before Savannah Luebking put a shot on net but was stopped by the MTA goalie. Mount Aloysius attempted the final shot of the game but was blocked as the final buzzer sounded with the score tied, 1-1.

Franciscan out-shot the Mountie 19-12 and the two teams each had four corner kicks. Trippe made five saves in net while her Mountie counterpart mad five.

Franciscan returns to action on Saturday when the Lady Barons host Penn State Behrend at 1pm.
