Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's soccer team made history Tuesday night as the Barons defeated Mount Aloysius 3-0 and set the program record for most wins in a season The Barons improved to 10-3-1 on the year and 6-0 in the AMCC.
The win guarantees a spot in the AMCC tournament this year; the first time in program history that the Barons will play in the tournament.
Franciscan 10 wins this season are the most ever by a Baron soccer team as the 2008 and 2009 squad each posted nine. The six wins in conference play tie most by the Barons and are the most wins in conference since Franciscan became eligible for the conference postseason.
Junior keeper Thomas Dosedel also made history for the Barons with his fourth solo shutout of the year as he topped his current goalie coach, William Herrmann, for most shutouts in a season. Dosedel shares two other shutouts with sophomore John Bolster this year.
Franciscan jumped out to a quick lead as the Barons gained possession after a Mountie corner kick and built up play through the middle of the field. Junior Leo Herrmann sent a pass into senior Joe Francis from the middle of the field and Francis finished it off over the goalie's head 13:31 into action.
Mount Aloysius attempted to find its equalizer but Dosedel made a pair of saves over the next 10 minutes to keep the Mounties off of the scoreboard. The Barons regained possession in their offensive side of the field and once again the Herrmann-Francis connection produced a goal. Herrmann tapped the ball around a defender and Francis picked it up and sent it over the diving goalie to give FUS a 2-0 lead 25:16 into action.
Wasting little time, sophomore Mark Fioramonti gave the Barons a little breathing room with his first goal of the season as he sent in a well-placed corner kick by senior Joseph Duran.
Franciscan did not want to settle for just three goals as Duran and Herrmann each put a ball on net but the Mountie goalie made a pair of stops and the Barons carried the 3-0 lead into halftime.
Dosedel preserved the win and shutout with six saves in the second half, including a pair of tough saves in traffic in the last five minutes. In all, Dosedel finished the day with nine saves, his season best.
Mount Aloysius held a 24-17 advantage in shots and a 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Barons return to action on Saturday when they host Penn State Behrend in a key AMCC matchup at 3:15pm.
