Lady Barons Earn No. 1 Seed in AMCC Tournament

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed in the 2016 AMCC Championship tournament and will host the  semifinal round and championship round this Saturday and Sunday.

The Lady Barons earned the No. 1 seed after going undefeated in conference play (8-0) and are 10-4 on the season. Penn State Behrend finished the year 7-1 in the league and earned the No. 2 seed. No. 3 seeded La Roche (5-3 AMCC) defeated No. 6 Mount Aloysius (4-4 AMCC) last Saturday, 5-1, to make it to the semifinals while No. 4 seeded Penn State Altoona (5-3 AMCC) earned a spot in the semis with a win over No. 5 Pitt.-Greensburg (4-4 AMCC), 5-0, last week. 

Sophomore Maria Binette who finished 10-3 in singles for the year and was a perfect 8-0 in AMCC single matches leads Franciscan. The freshman duo of Madelyn Conrad and Grace Hammel finished a perfect 8-0 at No. 2 doubles against AMCC opponents while Taranee Karimpour and Maggie Vander Woude finished a perfect 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Barons will square off against No. 4 Penn State Altoona, a team they beat 7-2 in the regular season, in the first semifinal match at 3:00 pm. Penn State Behrend will take on La Roche immediately following the Lady Baron/Lion match. Penn State Behrend beat the Red Hawks 7-2 during the year. 

In partnership with the 20th Anniversary of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, each championship site is encouraged to participate in a community service. The Lady Barons will be helping out at FamilyLinks in Wilkinsburg, Pa. FamilyLinks is a semi-independent living facility to help young adults transition from foster care to adulthood. The Lady Barons will help with manual labor and setting up a new office as well as spending time with residents.
