Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's soccer team suffered its first AMCC loss of the season as the visiting Penn State Behrend Lions were able to stave off a feisty Baron offense and win, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
The Lions scored quickly in the first half to take a 1-0 lead just 5:04 into action. After a ball out of bounds stayed in the Lions' possession, Ryan Thorsen tossed the ball far into the box for Anthony Civelli who sent a low header under a diving Thomas Dosedel for the goal.
The Baron defense was given very little time to rest as the Lions sent six shots their way and had three corner kicks over the next 17 minutes. Dosedel held strong, however, and kept the score close at 1-0.
After a flurry of substitutions on both sides, the Barons got their first good shot on goal but a header from junior Leo Herrmann went just wide of the net. Moments later, senior Joseph Duran had a hard shot blocked that would have put the Behrend goalie to work. The Barons drew a hard foul just inside the box in the 32nd minute and Herrmann was up for his second penalty kick of the year. After a deep breath and a fake to the keepers left, Herrmann found the back of the net in the right-hand corner as the Behrend goalie dove to his left and the score was tied 1-1.
The score would remain knotted for the remainder of the first half.
Sean Gallagher broke the tie for PSB as he took a pass from Thorsen and buried it deep in the net from about 20 yards out to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.
The Barons defense went to work and sent six shots in the direction of the net but could not tie the game and the final buzzer sounded with the Lions up 2-1.
The Lions held a slight 18-15 advantage in shots while leading 10-2 in corners. Dosdel finished the day with five saves.
The Barons look to rebound as they face Penn State Altoona on Wednesday in Altoona, Pa. at 7:15pm.
