Box Score ALTOONA, Pa. – The Franciscan women's soccer team played solid soccer for a full 90 minutes and earned a 1-0 win over AMCC opponent Penn State Altoona, Wednesday evening.
The win improved the Lady Barons to 5-10-1 and 2-5-1 in the AMCC while the Lions fell to 4-10-1 and 1-5-1 in the league.
Making her fourth-straight start in net, freshman goalie Glorianne Trippe made nine saves in her first career win and solo shut out, just one shy of her season best.
"Trippe was definitely what kept us in the game today," complimented head coach Clare McBane. "She had a really solid game in goal and did some great things for us."
The freshman made three saves in the first half as both teams were unable to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action.
Each team opened the second half with a shot off target before Kate Janney put one on net but the shot was saved by the Lion goalie. A minute and a half later, the Lady Barons had the ball in front of the Lion net and senior Savannah Luebking sent a pass to freshman Katie Kilian who lofted the ball over the keeper from the right side of the box for the first goal of the game and the Lady Baron lead, 1-0, right at 51:00.
"These last few games, they are getting better and better in the flow of play. It's even more promising to see different people get into the mix. Of course, it is exciting to see the Megan (Riederer) to Megan (Luiso) connection, but it's even more exciting to see that build and success from two totally different players like tonight."
Nine minutes later, the Lions had one of their best scoring chances as a shot by Shoshana Mahoney drew Trippe off her line but Mahoney just missed the net and hit the post. Mahoney quickly collected her rebound and a Lady Baron was on the line for Trippe to make the final save.
The Lady Barons were able to hold off the Lions as Trippe made two saves in the final 10 minutes of action to give FUS a 1-0 win.
"I just keep telling the girls, in victory or defeat, as long as you're improving, you are succeeding. Our number one goal is still to give back to the Lord and skill and talent He has given us on the field, and they are still accomplishing that goal," remarked coach McBane.
The defense allowed just 10 shots to get on target and have been getting better with each game this season. "A big thing with our defense is how young our center backs are. Every game you will have successes and mistakes and to see those mistakes turn from goals into smaller ones that you can adjust and fix is very promising for the future."
Leading the young back line is freshman Emma Cross. Cross has impressed the coaching staff this year as she has grown and developed in her role as the Lady Baron center back. "Emma really had a great game in regards to defensive recovery. She made some stops on breakaways that stopped Trippe from having to make saves on those instances."
The Lady Barons return home on Saturday for their final game of the season as they honor their graduating seniors. Franciscan will host Medaille at 1pm.
