Box Score

ADA, Ohio – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Ohio Northern, 19-4, Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Dan McCartney led the Barons (0-1) with a pair of goals and an assist while sophomores Mike Rosaschi and Jonas McCaig each chipped in a score.

The Barons got off to a slow start as Ohio Northern took a 7-0 lead after the first two quarters. The Polar Bears (1-0) were a perfect 3-3 on extra man opportunities in the first half.

"We had a lot of ugly penalties in the first half that we have to clean up," commented head coach Pete Rosaschi. "We were too undisciplined and we have to tighten it up. It was our first game of the season and we had some nerves that we have to shake off."

The Barons got on the board early in the third quarter as McCartney scored his first collegiate goal 2:34 into play. Trailing 9-1, McCartney scored his second tally just over a minute later after sophomore Mark Hanlon won the ensuing faceoff after another Polar Bear goal. With 10 seconds left in a man-up opportunity for the Barons, McCartney scored his second goal of the game to cut the lead to 9-2.

The Polar Bears scored the game's next five goals to take a 14-2 lead with 2:51 to play in the third. Rosaschi scored his first goal of the season off a pass from McCartney off the ensuing faceoff. Hanlon won the faceoff for the Barons and McCartney picked up the ground ball and fed it to Rosaschi to cut the lead to 14-3.

Ohio Northern opened the fourth quarter with three-straight goals before McCaig found the back of the net for the first time this season with 3:19 to play. The Polar Bears closed out the game with two final goals to bring the score to its final, 19-4.

Sophomore Peter Herrmann played his first ever game in net for the Barons and made an impressive 12 saves. "Peter did a great job for us in the cage today," remarked coach Rosaschi. "He played well for us today, especially never playing this position in a game before today."

The Barons won 16 of the 27 faceoffs while the Polar Bears with 7-8 on extra man opportunities.

The Barons head to Dallas, Texas for a three-game stint for spring break. FUS opens the week against Oglethorpe at 2 p.m. CST on March 7.
