Myrtle Beach, SC- The Franciscan softball team dropped a pair of games on spring break, Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Lady Barons fell to Anna Maria 13-5 before dropping a 10-1 decision to Hilbert.

In the second inning against Anna Maria, Kelsey Cornelio reached first base on an error. Therese Wood followed with a single. Lindsey Finch drove in both runners with a two-run single. The third inning brought in another run for the Barons. Jordan Cunningham, who was 2-3 in the competition, doubled and then stole third on a passed ball. Wood brought her round with a single upping her batting to 2-3 for that game. Later in the game Cunningham lead off with a single, followed by Cornelio putting runners in position. Finch smashed a double clearing the previous base runners. Finch went 3-3, with 4 RBIs, a triple and a stolen base.

The Cats took advantage of the Barons mistakes and earned the win. Pitching was a rough spot for the Barons with many walks and hit batters. Junior Cunningham did not appear on the mound today, in order to give her rest. "We want to get more consistent tomorrow and cut down on the walks by our pitchers," Coach Walker commented. "Hopefully having Jordan (Cunningham) rested and ready to pitch will help."

The second game of the day was against Hilbert College who FUS will meet again later in the season. The Lady Barons fell to the Hawks 10-1 in their sixth game of spring break. The Hawks flew ahead with a five run inning during the top of the first. The lone run for the Barons occurred in the first as well. Iliana Gonzales reached first from a throwing error by the shortstop and was able to round the base and put herself in scoring position. Gonzales advanced to third on a ground out by Cecilia Lademan.  With two outs and a runner still on base, Jordan Cunningham made a connection in the right direction singling to center bringing Gonzales safely home. FUS struggled the remainder of the game to capitalize on offensive opportunities leaving four players on base.

"The Hilbert pitcher was the best pitcher we have faced down here striking out five of our players," Coach Walker pointed out about the Baron's offensive lack. The Hawks doubled their runs from the first inning by the last out of the game. Hilbert now improves to 4-6 on the season, while FUS is still in hunt for their first victory.

Tomorrow, the Barons will finish their spring break play in sunny South Carolina playing Gwynedd Mercy (postponed from Wednesday) at 9:30 am and Wentworth at 11:30am.
