Box Score IRVING, Texas – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team closed out a successful spring break trip with a commanding 12-4 win over University of Dallas, Friday afternoon.
Despite less than ideal weather conditions this week, the Barons were able to play well as a team and end their week in Texas on a high note. "The field was in really good shape today despite the rain," remarked head coach Peter Rosaschi. "The guys really played well today and really rebounded after a tough game against Southwestern."
UD got out to a quick 1-0 lead as Matthew Cyr sent home an unassisted goal with 10:08 to play in the first. Sophomore Mark Hanlon won the ensuing faceoff and after a pair of turnovers, the Barons controlled the ball in their offensive zone. Sophomore Jonas McCaig picked up a groundball and got it to Hanlon who sent it past the UD goalie to even the game at 1-1 with 9:18 to play. Senior Matthew Cahill won the next faceoff and Hanlon picked up the groundball and quickly went to the cage for his second goal of the game. Freshman Dan McCartney closed out the first quarter with a goal after his initial shot was blocked to give FUS a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter featured 4-0 run by the Barons to push their lead to 7-1 at the intermission. Senior goalie Peter Herrmann made eight of his 13 saves for the game in the opening 30 minutes of action.
McCaig pushed the Baron lead to 8-1 with his second tally of the game just under a minute into the third quarter. Sophomore Paul Modzelewski added a score of his own at 9:04 off a pass from McCaig to give FUS a 9-1 lead and close out two-straight scoreless quarters for Herrmann.
UD opened the fourth and final quarter with a 3-1 run but sophomore Mike Rosaschi and McCaig posted back-to-back goals in the final two minutes to seal the 12-4 win for the Barons.
Hanlon led the Barons with four goals and assists while McCaig posted three goals and a pair of assists for FUS. Rosaschi and McCartney each scored a pair as well.
Hanlon was 9-for-17 on faceoffs and picked up seven groundballs while Modzelewski caused four turnovers. Herrmann was outstanding in goal once again with 13 saves for the Barons.
Franciscan returns to the field next Wednesday when the Barons travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on La Roche at 4:00 p.m. before opening their home slate against Wilmington (OH) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
