Box Score 2 Waynesburg, Pa. - The Franciscan softball team returned to the field after spring break competition to face the Yellow Jackets and even with tough pitching, errors and runners left on base led to a pair of losses for the Lady Barons. Waynesburg took the first game 9-4 before winning the nightcap, 9-3.
The Lady Barons got the ball rolling in the first inning scoring with a pair of runs. Lindsey Finch led off with a walk and advanced to second on Cecilia Lademan's single. The inning looked to be almost regretted by the Barons with two quick strikeouts and two still on base. Then Therese Wood connected with a ball sending it to the left fielder who did not field it cleanly and Finch and Lademan were given safe passage to travel on home. Waynesburg captailized on four Lady Baron errors in the bottom half of the inning for six runs to take a 6-2 lead.
"Both pitchers, Amanda and Molly, pitched their best games today this year. Both threw complete games and only gave up 3 earned runs each. We eliminate the unearned runs and these games are a different story." Coach Walker was pleased with his pitching complimenting the girls in the circle saying they were the brightest spots today.
The Lady Barons made a last stand in the top of the seventh to overcome the run gap set by their opponent. Jordan Cunningham singled to left starting the inning. Anna King's sacrificed bunt moved the pinch Renee Shumay runner into scoring position. Lindsay Finch, who went 1-3 for the game, sent one to center field earning an RBI with Shumay touching home and was able to round first and slip to second. Lademan laid down another sac bunt to get Finch to third-the ideal scoring position. Finch then capitalized on a wild pitch and scored the final run for the Lady Barons.
The second game saw six errors for the Lady Barons and one less run scored. The Barons struggled at the plate with 14 strikeouts for both games and leaving 11 runners on base. Some offensive pluses were Wood who had a solid day at the plate going 2-6 for the day bringing in an RBI in the second game and Finch 2-7 with 1 RBI and scoring three runs.
The Lady Barons will try to make the magic happen this Saturday with their home opening double header against Geneva College starting at 12p.m.
