Lady Baron Lax Earns Season's First Win

Box Score

WILMINGTON - Franciscan women's lacrosse beat the Fightin' Quakers of Wilmington (OH) for the fourth year in a row, a 9-5 decision that gave the Lady Barons their first win of the season.

"We were able to put ourselves in a place to win today by making adjustments to our defensive transition, winning the draw, taking more shots and our goalie having an awesome game," head coach Maura Conant said.

After winning the initial draw control, sophomore middie Mary Krolicki was the first to put the ball in the back of the net, scoring her fourth goal of the season at the 25:58 mark to give the Lady Barons a 1-0 lead.

Wilmington then got a yellow card on the ensuing draw control, giving Franciscan a man-up opportunity. Krolicki took advantage and scored her second goal of the game off an assist from freshman middie Elizabeth McEntee.

The Lady Barons added one more goal before freshman goalie Savannah Jane Duncan allowed her first goal, more than halfway through the first half. Duncan finished with 10 saves in her first collegiate win.

Going into halftime, the score favored Franciscan 6-3. Wilmington cut the lead down to two goals with 28:32 remaining before the Lady Barons went on a three-goal run in just five minutes, giving Franciscan more than enough goals to win the game.

Freshman attack Carly McDonald and Margaret Gargulinski each scored two goals while Treise McCarthy, Tracy McClelland and McEntee also scored against Wilmington. McEntee also assisted on two other goals.

Franciscan scored nine goals on 19 shots, including going 4-for-5 on free position shots, a marked improvement on offense as the Lady Barons were able to capitalize on their possessions. Draw controls also favored Franciscan with the Lady Barons winning 10 to Wilmington's six.

One area that the Fightin' Quakers did dominate was ground balls, however, picking up almost twice as many as Franciscan (36-19).

With the first win in the books, the Lady Barons now turn to the next game against Waynesburg on Thursday, March 31, at 6 p.m.

"I'm looking forward to continue to improve as a team from this win," Conant said.
