Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Franciscan women's lacrosse continued its winning ways with a 11-8 win over Waynesburg University for the team's second win of the season.
Waynesburg got off to a hot start, scoring the game's first goal just 30 seconds off a false start, and took a two-goal lead before the Lady Barons got on the scoreboard with a goal from freshman Treise McCarthy.
Down 2-1 with 17:38 remaining in the half, head coach Maura Conant called a timeout and the Lady Barons were able to make some adjustments on the field, scoring the final three goals of the first half and taking a 5-4 lead that Franciscan never relinquished.
"We just had to adjust our transition a little bit and adjusting a little bit on the circle, that helped us getting possession," Conant said. "Also, we had to adjust some of the plays we were calling on offense."
Franciscan opened up the second half with two more goals and finished off the half with a 6-4 advantage, including three goals by senior attack Tracy McClelland. McClelland finished the game with four goals, bringing her career total to 98 goals.
The Lady Barons 11 goals came from six different players taking a total of 36 shots during the game, a season high in shots taken, showing the team's improvement when it comes to capitalizing on offensive possessions.
"We had six people scoring and four different people assisting," Conant said. "It was good to see everybody working together as a team on that."
Transition was also a strong point against the Yellow Jackets as the Lady Barons were 16-20 on clear attempts. Franciscan also won 12 draw controls to Waynesburg's five and had eight less turnovers than the Yellow Jackets. Turnovers continue to be a point of improvement, however, as the Lady Barons turned the ball over 26 times throughout the course of the game.
"We are still chipping away at those, trying to get our turnovers down," Conant said. "Each game they decrease but we still have some work to do to with getting our turnovers down."
It was a strong game overall as attack, midfield and defense all played particularly well. Freshman goalie Savannah Jane Duncan had 10 saves to eight goals allowed in her second collegiate win in the cage.
After playing six consecutive games on the road, the Lady Barons are excited to head home for their first game against Muskingum on Saturday, April 2, at 12 p.m.
"We've been traveling a lot between spring break and some long away games so heading into our sixth game of the season, our first home game, so we're definitely excited to start this four-game home stand," Conant said. "We're just excited to continue building our chemistry, working on what we need to work on, and improving what we are doing well, all in front of our home crowd."
