Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's tennis team made history with an impressive 10 All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference First Team selections, while adding a pair of second team selections, to land every nominated player on the All-Conference teams. The AMCC announced the 2016 All-AMCC teams Tuesday afternoon.
The Barons, who won their fourth-straight AMCC title on Sunday, swept first team accolades in doubles and landed four players on the first team in No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 Singles.
Leading the pack with a place on the first team at both No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles is sophomore Jarek Sulak. The Frisco, TX native went undefeated in regular season AMCC singles play with a 6-0 record and had the most wins at No. 2 singles (6) against AMCC opponents. Sulak had the most wins at No. 2 singles against all opponents (7). In the last two seasons, Sulak has not lost a conference match in single competition.
Joining Sulak with First Team accolades at No. 1 doubles is fellow sophomore John Gallagher. Sulak and Gallagher were one of two pairs to go undefeated in doubles action in the AMCC this season with a perfect 5-0 record. The duo was the only team to finished the season perfect at No. 1 doubles and combined for a 7-4 record at the No. 1 spot over the entire season. Their seven wins were the most a pair recorded in both overall doubles and No. 1 doubles for the year in the league.
Gallagher earned an individual spot on the All-AMCC Second Team with his impressive play at No. 3 singles. Gallagher was 4-1 at No. 3 and had the most wins against AMCC opponents this season. The San Diego, CA native has the second most wins at No. 3 singles against all opponents this season.
At No. 2 doubles, seniors David Freytag and Zachary Quiza earend a spot on All-AMCC First Team for their impressive play this season. The two won every doubles match that partnered in this season and was one of only two undefeated No. 2 doubles teams. Freytag and Quiza tied for more AMCC doubles wins (5) and had the most wins at No. 2 doubles in all matches. The duo was tied for most wins in doubles at any position for the entire season.
Freytag claimed a spot on the All-AMCC First Team at No. 4 singles after going undefeated in league play. The Sidney, OH native had the second most win at No. 4 singles against AMCC opponents and tied for the most wins at No. 4 singles against all teams. Freytag tied for second-most singles win for the season.
Quiza claimed his fourth-consecutive spot on an All-AMCC team with a second team nod at No. 1 singles this season. The East Brunswick, NJ native won his last four AMCC singles matches while only dropping 12 points. His only AMCC loss of the season came against Penn State Behrend's Yanique Apgar, who was named the Player of the Year.
Rounding out the First Team doubles selection is sophomore Connor Jooste and freshman Richard Watson at No. 3 doubles. The duo has won its last three doubles matches together and tied for the most wins at No. 3 doubles against all opponents this season. Jooste and Watson tied for most wins at No. 3 doubles against AMCC opponents only and was one of three teams undefeated in doubles all season
Jooste earned a spot on the first team at No. 5 singles after going undefeated in singles play against AMCC teams this season. The sophomore was 2-0 at No. 5 singles and played a pair of matches at No. 4 singles and once at No. 6. Jooste tied for second-most AMCC singles wins and was one of three player undefeated at No. 5 singles.
Rounding out Franciscan's all conference selections is Watson with a No. 6 singles First Team honor. Watson tied for the most AMCC singles wins and was undefeated in AMCC singles action this season. Watson split his time between No. 5 and No. 6 singles and was 2-0 at No. 6 and 6-0 overall in the AMCC. Watson sealed the championship win for the Barons with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against Penn State Behend in the conference championship meet.
This year marked the fourth-straight AMCC title for the Barons and fifth in the last five years and have earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in May.
