Bearcats Best Lady Baron Lax

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE - In a game suspended due to lightning, Franciscan women's lacrosse fell 21-12 to the Bearcats of St. Vincent College.

The game started off eventful as both teams traded goals back and forth for the first 13 minutes until St. Vincent took a two-goal lead, 6-4, with 15:01 remaining in the first half. Franciscan then cut the lead down to one off an unassisted goal from freshman middie Liz Dawyot.

St. Vincent ended the first half on a 7-0 run with four goals from senior Helena Shoplik and held a 13-5 advantage going into halftime.

"We dug ourselves a hole when we let the tie get away from us in the first half," head coach Maura Conant said. "Our adjustments on defense weren't working today."

Franciscan opened up the second half with a goal from senior attack Tracy McClelland. While the second half was much more competitive, the Lady Barons could not get within six goals of the Bearcat lead.

"We weren't able to recover in terms of the overall score, even though the second half was 8-7 (in favor of St. Vincent)," Conant said.

Dawyot led the Lady Barons with three goals, one assist and also five draw controls. Freshmen Carly McDonald and Elizabeth McEntee, along with McClelland, scored two goals each while Lauren Noce, Meg Gargulinski and Mary Krolicki each chipped in one goal apiece.

On the defensive end, freshman defender Elizabeth Jordan finished with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

"Carly McDonald had a great game with two goals and three assists, and Liz Jordan was strong on the caused turnovers and ground balls," Conant said.

Team statistics were pretty comparable between the Lady Barons and the Bearcats as Franciscan held the advantage in ground balls (20-19), turnovers (21 compared to 23) and clears (17-for-21 as compared to 20-for-26). St. Vincent led in saves (10-9), draw controls (19-16) and shots (33-27).

With one game left in the season, the Lady Barons will take a chance to honor the program's first four-year seniors on Saturday. Emily Bedard, Noce, McClelland and Gargulinski have been foundational in the success of the Franciscan women's lacrosse program, particularly this season as the team currently holds a 7-5 record.

The Lady Barons will host Hanover for Senior Day on Saturday, April 23, at 2 p.m.
