Barons Sweep 9-0 on Senior Day

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE - Franciscan men's tennis finished off its regular season with a 9-0 sweep of Westminster (Pa.) on Senior Day.

"Today was a good day for the men's side," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "It was nice to be out here on our home facility for the first time all year for Senior Day. It was a good match to get ready for the NCAA tournament after our conference tournament."

Before the match started, Ellis took the time to honor David Freytag, Zachary Quiza and Joseph Staniszewski for their four years of dedication to the men's tennis program. Since their freshman year, the Barons are four-time defending Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference champions, something that has never been done before by an AMCC men's tennis team.

Freytag still has one more year of NCAA eligibility remaining so he will be returning to the team as a graduate student next year.

"I think it was a good Senior Day," Ellis said. "Luckily, we have David one more year but Zack and Joe will definitely be missed."

In doubles play, Freytag and Quiza paired up at No. 2 doubles as they have all season while Staniszewski paired up with freshman Richard Watson at No. 3 doubles. Both pairs won by a score of 8-0.

"It was nice to sit Connor out and play Joe in both doubles and singles, to have three seniors out there," Ellis said. "RJ and Joe played well together."

Sophomores John Gallagher and Jarek Sulak finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

In a perfect Senior Day tribute, Ellis sent his three seniors out together to start singles play with Quiza playing No. 1, Freytag playing No. 4 and Staniszewski playing No. 6. All three seniors finished off their singles matches sweeping their opponents by 6-0,6-0 scores.

"We were able to have all three of them on at the same time, which was neat," Ellis said. "All three just played well. For seniors, the one thing you have going for you is familiarity. They've played here before, they've had four years of match play. They just went out confident and played well."

Sulak, Gallagher and Watson won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, to complete the regular-season finale sweep.

"The guys played well," Ellis said. "We swept doubles, and then everyone across the board played some good singles."

With the regular season behind them, the Barons now turn their sights to their fourth-straight NCAA tournament appearance, looking to advance past the first round for the first time since 2013.

Franciscan will take on an opponent TBA in the first round of the NCAA tournament in May. Date and time are also TBA.
