Box Score 2 Buffalo, NY-After two defeating losses yesterday, the Lady Barons displayed the Franciscan value of not giving up against hosting Medaille. The Mavericks boast a .500 record in the AMCC and are a very competitive team. Coming from behind in the second game, the team was able to score six runs in the fifth inning, holding off Medaille to extend the game to eight innings.
"We had a tough loss in extra innings but this was probably the best game we have played all year," head coach Jim Walker commented on the game.
The Lady Barons took an early lead in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the first. Cecilia Lademan singled to second and her speed carried her to third on Iliana Gonzales' single through the right side. Gonzales advanced to second on a passed ball with two players now itching to score. The Medaille catcher let another pitch get away from her giving Lademan the window of opportunity to score and advancing Gonzales to third. Renee Shumay singled up the middle for an RBI with Gonzales coming home.
A few hits and a couple errors helped the Mavericks take a 5-2 lead after the third. The Lady Barons were not shaken, showing their fighting spirit in the fifth inning. Gonzales started off with a walk and moved to second on Kelsey Cornelio's single. Shumay laid down a bunt, filling the bases. Then Jordan Cunningham tripled to right field clearing the bases and collecting three RBIs. This huge hit caused a pitching change for Medaille, but this did not stop the Barons. Colleen McInerney reached on a fielder's choice of tagging Cunningham out at home. Anna Ames singled bumping McInerney to second. Anna King loaded the bases with a single to the pitcher, bringing up the top of the order. Lindsey Finch had a successful at bat with a single up the middle, scoring McInerney. Lademan popped up to third for the second out of the inning, handing the bat over to Gonzales. The senior singled to center scoring Ames and King came around with an error by the center fielder. Cornelio ended the inning grounding out to third base.
Second baseman Gonzales went 4-for-7 on the day with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. "Iliana is definitely the leader on our team and she is showing the younger girls how hard you have to play to be successful at the collegiate level"
The Lady Barons 8-5 lead was soon met by the Mavericks in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The game remained a stalemate pushing play into extra innings until the bottom of the eighth. With two outs down, Amanda Mesi singled up the middle for Medaille and she moved to second on a pass ball. A runner in scoring position was all the Mavericks needed to win the hard fought battle. Morgan Ziemba singled to left field bring her teammate home to steal the victory from under the Lady Baron's grasp.
"Amanda Pulice pitched a really good game today and kept their hitters off balance." Coach Walker praised his freshman pitcher on a tough loss. Pulice faced 39 batters and threw 60% strikes only walking two batters.
The Lady Barons supplied 14 hits in game two even upping their competitor by one hit and scoring eight times, tying their highest score of the season against Geneva College.
"We had 10 hits in the first game and really battled hard in a game we fell behind early. That momentum carried over to the second game."
The first game resulted in a 15-6 loss for the Barons. After trailing 14-1 after two innings of play, the Lady Barons were able to close the large gap with five additional runs. Finch hosted a perfect batting average for the game going 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
The Lady Barons will finish play on the road at La Roche this Wednesday at 3pm, before returning to home turf on Saturday for Senior Day.
