Box Score STEUBENVILLE - Franciscan women's lacrosse extended its winning streak to five games by beating Hiram College 12-7.
"We had a string of very competitive games and knew we would need to be playing well," head coach Maura Conant said. "I am so proud of how these girls are coming together as a team and getting it done. With the absence of a couple starters, the bench has really stepped up these past couple of games."
Hiram jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game before freshman attack Treise McCarthy got the Lady Barons on the scoreboard with 25:14 remaining in the first half. The freshman's goal sparked a 4-0 run by Franciscan which included two goals from senior attack Tracy McClelland.
The Terriers brought the lead down to one goal with 19:31 left in the half before Franciscan added three more goals, two from freshman attack Carly McDonald and one from freshman middie Liz Dawyot. Hiram answered with two goals of their own before McClelland and McCarthy netted two more Lady Baron goals before halftime.
With Franciscan winning 9-5, the second half featured a lot more defensive play as only five goals were scored between the two teams. Dawyot scored her third and fourth goals in the second half while McClelland also added her fourth goal.
Both Dawyot and McClelland finished the game with four goals while McDonald scored three and McCarthy netted two, rounding out the scoring for the Lady Barons. Junior attack Anne Foster was also a bright spot for Franciscan, dishing out her first assist of the year and winning two draw controls.
Freshman goalie Savannah Jane Duncan faced 17 shots from the Terrier, making 10 saves in her fifth win in the cage.
Hiram had the edge in ground balls (26-24), draw controls (11-10), shots (29-27) and clears (11-for-16 compared to 12-for-22). Turnovers were equal as both the Terriers and Franciscan committed 26 turnovers. Franciscan was 2-for-4 on its free position shots while Hiram was only 1-for-7.
