Box Score NEW CONCORD, OH – Junior Anna McCarty provided the drama for the Franciscan women's soccer team as she scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the Lady Barons over Muskingum, 2-1.
The two teams played a scoreless first overtime period with Muskingum holding a 3-1 advantage in shots but could not get past keeper, Sarah Luebking. Just over a minute into the second overtime, McCarty collected a beautiful cross into the box from Maria Boston and one-touched it into the net for the game-winner.
Olivia Janney forced the overtime late in the second period with a game-trying goal in the 84th minute off a pass from Katie Kilian.
Luebking kept Muskingum off the scoreboard in the second half to force extra soccer.
"Sarah had a phenomenal game in goal today," complimented head coach Clare McBane. "She made the crucial saves early in the game to make the two goals we scored matter. She is a very smart goalkeeper. She may not be the tallest or biggest keeper, but because she is so smart, she is one of the best around."
Though Muskingum did score early in the first to take a 1-0 lead, Luebking staved off five shots in the first 45 minutes to keep the game close. The sophomore finished the day with five saves in net as she controlled the defense.
The Lady Barons out-shot Muskingum 17-15 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks this afternoon.
"They are adjusting and improving with every game and that's what you want to see out of the team," remarked coach McBane. "They are taking advantage of this time to improve on the small things and each player is doing what she needs to do to get better."
The Lady Barons look to continue this three-game winning streak on Thursday, September 15 as they host Westminster (Pa.) in a 5pm game.
