Lady Barons Fall to Yellow Jackets on the Road

Box Score

BEREA – The Franciscan volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Baldwin-Wallace, Monday night, on the road.

Baldwin-Wallace jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set and held the Lady Barons at bay to take a 25-13 win. The second set looked much like the first and FUS had a tough time getting its offense going before the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-12 win in the second second.

The third set looked like a completely different team as the Lady Barons battled hard and eventually took a 16-15 lead behind the serving of sophomore Callahan Hickey. A pair of BW attack errors gave FUS a 17-15 lead, their most substantial of the match to that point. After trading several points back and forth, Franciscan and the Yellow Jackets were knotted at 23-23. The two teams traded kills, FUS' coming from Ciola before the Lady Barons got their first set point of the day at 25-24 with Hickey serving. Sophomore Becca Haven was able to close out the set with a kill to hand FUS its first win of the evening, 26-24.

"The girls' really worked hard and came back and battled," remarked head coach Kelly Herrmann on the team's performance in the third set. "We played with energy and didn't give up which was good to see."

The Lady Barons weren't able to carry the momentum into the fourth set and the Yellow Jackets quickly worked a 10-3 lead. Franciscan cut the lead back to 12-6 but six-straight BW points pushed the advantage to 18-6. Rachel Potopa served four strong points to bring the score to 22-12, but Baldwin-Wallace closed out the match with the final three points to bring the score to its final, 25-12.

"They were a very good team but we have to play better against teams like that. We worked hard and tried to stay positive which is very good," commented coach Herrmann. "We will learn from this and move on."

Annie Nehrbas led the Lady Barons with nine kills while Haven handed out 18 assists. Sophomore Mary Moore posted 14 digs in the match for FUS.

Franciscan returns to the court on Wednesday when the Lady Barons travel to Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon at 7pm.
