Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-0 battle to Westminster (Pa.), Thursday evening.
Westminster and the Lady Barons battled for possession in the first 15 minutes of action as the Titans took four shots to Franciscan's two. Sophomore keeper Sarah Luebking kept Westminster off the board with four incredible saves to open the game.
The Titans broke the scoreless tie as the Lady Barons were called for a tough foul right inside the box. Keely Birsic took the penalty kick for Westminster and put the ball past a diving Luebking to her left.
Westminster took the 1-0 lead into halftime despite getting off seven more shots than Franciscan. Despite a barrage of shots coming her way, Luebking remained steady and strong and turned away six of the seven shots that came on goal and kept the score close.
Westminster wasted very little time in the second half as the Titans scored just over a minute in to push the lead to 2-0.
Despite four more shots from the Lady Barons, Franciscan couldn't find a hole past the Titan keeper and the game ended 2-0 in favor of WC.
Junior Anna McCarty led the Lady Barons with three shots, two on goal, while Elizabeth Krilich had two shots, both on net.
Luebking finished the day with 11 saves and helped keep the score close for Franciscan.
The Lady Barons look to get back on the winning side as they host Chatham on Saturday at 1pm.
