Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Junior Leo Herrmann once against provided overtime fireworks for the Franciscan men's soccer team as he scored just 27 seconds into the second overtime period to lift the Barons to a 2-1 win over Waynesburg, late Monday evening.
After Waynesburg tied it 1-1 late in the second half, the Barons prepared for their third overtime game of the season. Going into tonight's game, FUS was 1-0-1 when playing extra soccer.
"I give a lot of credit to these guys – they came into the game mentally and physically ready to go and never gave up," complimented head coach Christian Bobak. "It's good to get some of these (games) under our belt before conference play. The guys are playing a full 90 minutes and never give up. Its good to see."
Both teams had scoring chances turned away by strong defenses and excellent play by the goalies in the first overtime but it was Franciscan that scored the golden goal in the second. The Yellow Jackets started with the ball on their half of the field but quickly turned it over to the Barons and Herrmann broke away from a couple Waynesburg defenders and shot across his body to put the ball in the back left hand corner just 27 seconds into the second overtime period for the win. It's Herrmann's second overtime game-winning goal of the season and his 11th total goal.
"He's our leader," commented coach Bobak on Herrmann. "We really lean on him and will continue to lean on him. He just wants to get better each game and really wants to and is growing as a player. It is a pleasure to coach him."
Herrmann opened the scoring early for the Barons just under five minutes into play. Junior Cuyler Ledyard fed the ball into the box for Herrmann and he dribbled through a pair of Yellow Jacket defenders and sent a rocket into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the half and most of the second until a Yellow Jacket scored with just under 15 minutes to play to set up the overtime heroics.
"You have to give a lot of credit to our defense once again. Any guy we put back there steps up and plays well," remarked coach Bobak. "Leo James had another great game for us. Tim Poiry and Jacob Rigaud both really played well today too."
Franciscan travels to Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday at 5pm to wrap up the Barons' non-conference schedule.
