Lady Barons Fall to Carnegie Mellon in Season Opener

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Franciscan women's soccer team lost a tough battle to Carnegie Mellon, 12-0, Friday night in both teams' season openers.

"Tonight's game was exactly what we expected," remarked head coach Clare McBane. "Sure we didn't think we would lose by as much, but we knew it was going to be a tough game and Carnegie Mellon is a very talented team."

The Tartans scored their first two goals of the game in the first six minutes and took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

CMU scored five more goals in the second half to push its lead to 12-0 for the final score.

"This was such a great learning experience for the [team]. The reason we schedule such a high caliber team like them is to get ready for the high quality teams we will see in conference play. You can't get used to playing fast, well-played soccer if you don't face teams like that outside of your conference schedule."

The Tartans may have held a 41-2 advantage in shots, but freshman goalie Glorianne Trippe had a great day in the net. She made 15 saves in her first collegiate game, including an incredible stop on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

"[The team] worked their tails off and never gave up. We walked away from that game seeing what fast well played soccer looked like and will be a better team because of it. The girls seemed really excited at the opportunity to learn and we will continue to grow."

The Lady Barons return home tomorrow as they host Thiel at 1pm in Steubenville.
