Barons Fall to Grove City

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University men's tennis team fell to the Grove City Wolverines on Wednesday, despite strong singles play from the top of the lineup.

The men took three courts to begin doubles, the other three occupied by the Lady Barons' doubles teams as part of the day's dual match. Senior David Freytag and junior John Gallagher quickly took a 4-1 lead on their opponents at No. 1 doubles, eventually taking the match 8-3. On court two, RJ Watson and Jack Galla, despite strong groundstrokes and aggressive net play, dropped No. 2 doubles 8-2.

Junior Dominic Clements and freshman Walter Matt displayed the same on-court chemistry established during their first match together against Indiana-East. After surrendering an early 3-2 lead, a few key points were all that separated them from victory; the No. 3 doubles spot was lost by a close margin, 8-6.

The Barons were down 2-1 as the top three singles players took the courts, the Barons in their home green uniforms, the Wolverines in their away jerseys, a bright red.

Sophomore RJ Watson demonstrated improved groundstroke depth, particularly on the backhand side, taking the first set 6-4. His high first serve percentage carried him to a decisive No. 3 singles win, solidifying the match in a tiebreak, 7-6. "RJ played really well" said head coach Jeremy Ellis. "Even under pressure he played well and won some clutch points at the end to close it out."

Watson also fielded and provided encouragement to both Freytag and Gallagher on court beside him. Freytag's 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 2 singles was nevertheless a sign of the senior's resolve and court awareness, both of which will only improve with increased practice time in the spring.

Gallagher impressed in his No. 1 singles spot, playing up because of the wrist injury of fellow junior Jarek Sulak. "John played amazing today" said Ellis.  "He really played a great match." Behind a strong, defensive baseline game, Gallagher recorded a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Despite the 3-6 overall loss, Ellis stressed the importance of the fall season as a time to prepare both mentally and physically for the spring to come.

The Barons' season continues October 6 against Capital, at 4:30 p.m. at the Bellview courts.
