Lady Barons Pick Up Two Wins on Saturday

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Franciscan women's tennis team continued its quest for a perfect AMCC season with a 7-2 win over Penn St.-Altoona in the morning before sweeping non-conference opponent, St. Vincent in the afternoon.

The Lady Barons kicked off the long day of tennis with a 7-2 win in Altoona. The dynamic freshman duo of Grace Hammel and Madelyn Conrad picked up another win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win this morning. Maggie Vander Woude and Taranee Karimpour gave the Lady Barons a 2-1 lead after doubles with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Franciscan battled for five singles wins to take the match, 7-2. Maria Binette (6-1, 6-2) and Vander Woude (6-1, 6-1)  both rolled at No. 2 singles and No. 5 singles.

The Lady Barons concluded their day with a 9-0 win against St. Vincent to improve to 8-2 overall on the year. Head coach Jeremy Ellis changed around the line up a bit to give some girls a rest and some girls extra time on the court and it paid off. Binette and Vander Woude paired for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles while Emmy Mathias and Sarah Carney won at No. 3 doubles, 9-7.

Karimpour earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles while Marisa Pinto picked up the win at No. 6 singles. After winning the first set, 6-4, her Bearcat opponent took the second 6-4. Pinto remained steady and battled to a 10-3 win to help seal the sweep for the Lady Barons.

Franciscan returns to the courts tomorrow when the Lady Barons host Mt. Aloysius at 2pm at Belleview Courts.
