Lady Barons Fall in Overtime to UPG

Box Score

LATROBE, Pa. – The Franciscan women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit with less than 10 minutes to play, but Pitt.-Greensburg scored the game-winner in overtime to lift the Bobcats over the Lady Barons in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action.

Down 2-0 with 5:10 to play, the Lady Barons were awarded a corner kick. Megan Riederer took the corner and sent it into the box for Megan Luiso. Luiso headed into the net to cut the Bobcat lead to 2-1.

Just over two minutes later, Franciscan got another corner and this time Riederer sent it into the box for Maria Boston. The junior headed it past the UPG keeper to tie the game at 2-2 with exactly three minutes to play.

Lusio got one last shot off before the end of regulation but it went wide the two teams headed into overtime.

"We are very dangerous in set pieces and the girls did a great job tonight in formation changes to create the corner kick opportunities," remarked head coach Clare McBane. "The absences of (Elizabeth) Krilich and Flanagan were clear tonight. As we build chemistry, injuries take it away so we have to build that again."

Boston opened the first overtime period with a shot on goal but was stopped by UPG goalie. The Bobcats and Lady Barons traded a pair of shots before two corner kicks were awarded to Pitt.-Greensburg. After Sarah Luebking made a pair of saves with less than two minutes to play, Maggie Kelly found an empty net after she collected the rebound off an originally saved shot.

"We are just not there yet, we just need to make that final step. The girls did a phenomenal job tonight to come back and keep playing hard. It's not easy to come back from a two-goal deficit and the fact that we  did it in less than five minutes really speaks to the team's skill and resolve."

The two teams were held scoreless in the first 45 before the Bobcats scored ten minutes into the second half and then again with 8:10 to play.

"We worked so hard tonight and did so many things well, we just have to play at that level and that well the entire time," continued coach McBane. "They have the talent to change the game in five minutes; we just need to work that hard for the full 90 minutes. We just aren't mature enough yet for that but we are getting there. We will get there."

Franciscan and Pitt.-Greensburg were tied in shots, 17 each, while the Bobcats held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

"You have to give credit where credit is due, Pitt-Greensburg finished the chances they got, and we had a lot of chances that we did not take advantage of and did not finish. We just have to finish."

"Yet again, the girls worked so hard and proved they have the skill, energy, and talent to win these games at moments, we just need to put it together for the whole game."

The Lady Barons return home on Saturday to host D'Youville at 1pm.
