Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's soccer team brought the dramatics for the excited home crowd as the Barons drew with Thiel, 1-1, Saturday afternoon.
After an evenly matched and scoreless first half, Thiel took a 1-0 lead 3:07 into the second as a loose ball deflected off of a Baron defender and found its way over the goal line to give the Tomcats a 1-0 lead. Junior goalie Thomas Dosedel made the intial save, but the ball couldn't be cleared before coming back over the line.
Franciscan's offense took over and possessed the ball for much of the second half but could not convert on its scoring opportunities. The Barons out-shot the Tomcats 11-5 in the second half and 28-12 for the game.
A hard foul on senior Joseph Duran happened inside the box in front of Thiel's net to set up a penalty kick for the Barons. First year head coach Christian Bobak put his trust in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Leo Herrmann, to take the PK and was not disappointed. After a small step to the left, Herrmann went to his right and the Tomcat goalie couldn't get a handle on the ball and the score was tied 1-1 with just 57 seconds left in regulation.
A shot by freshman Lorenzo Cuenca with 16 seconds to play narrowly missed going in and hit the post to keep the game tied and the two teams headed into overtime.
Franciscan out-shot the Tomcats 10-2 in the two overtime periods and the Thiel goalie made four incredible saves to maintain the tie score as the two teams had to settle for a tie, 1-1.
FUS saw a lot of strong offense from numerous players as 12 Barons recorded a shot, and eight had a multiple-shot game for FUS. As a young team looking for consistency and chemistry, it is promising to see a variety of players attacking the net and creating scoring opportunities.
The Barons look for their first win of the year as they host Gevena on Wednesday at 5pm.
