Lady Barons Fall to D'Youville on Senior Day

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan volleyball team's season came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Lady Barons dropped a back-and-forth battle with D'Youville, 3-1, Saturday afternoon.

After winning the first set 25-23, the Lady Barons dropped the next three sets 25-21, 25-21, 25-21.

After tying the first set at 17-17, the Lady Barons rattles off three-straight points to take a 20-17 lead and held on for the 25-23 win.

After trailing 19-17 in the second set, the Spartans used a 4-2 run to tie the set at 21-21 and rattled off four-straight points to with 25-21 and tied the match at 1-1.

Franciscan found themselves down 18-13 in the third set before the Lady Barons used a 7-0 swing behind a pair of kills from Meghan Bayer and a service ace from Maria Ciola to take a 20-18 lead. D'Youville scored the set's next four points before the team teams traded points back and forth until DYC eventually won the set, 25-21.

The Spartans once again mounted an 18-13 lead in the fourth set and once again the Lady Barons' never say die attitude proved to carry them to within two, trailing 21-19. DYC halted the Lady Barons run to take the lead 23-19 before the two teams traded the next two points each. DYC held on to win 25-21 and close out the match 3-1.

Ciola led the Lady Barons with 13 kills while Bayer had 11. Senior Monica Rigaud, competing in her final match as a Lady Baron, finished the night with seven kills, two digs and a block assist. Freshman Sydney Riley dished out 36 assists.

Following the match, the Lady Barons honor their lone senior, Monica Rigaud. The Wintersville, OH native wraps up her career with 281 kills, 117 total blocks and 88 digs in three years with Franciscan.

Franciscan ends its season with a 6-16 overall record and a 5-4 slate in the AMCC.
